Part 2 Dragging Me Down

 stuart: hey, lisa! lisa!
lisa: oh, hey stuart. sorry, i didn’t see you there. stuart: is everything alright?
lisa: ①funny you should ask. as a matter of fact things are nowhere close to alright.
stuart: what seems to be the trouble?
  lisa: everything.
stuart: you’re gonna have to be a bit more specific than that.
lisa: there are just so many problems in my life right now, and the one person i wish i could talk to about it is completely 1)oblivious to anyone else’s problems but her own.
stuart: is it fair to assume you’re talking about jan? lisa: obviously! she’s supposed to be my bff, but it’s always as if her issues 2)dwarf everyone else’s. stuart: that must be frustrating.
lisa: you have no idea. she’s so unreliable, and never around when i need her. she claims to be someone i can turn to when i’m in need, but it’s all a 3)fa?ade. the only person she cares about is herself.
   smart sentences
① funny you should ask.
funny you should ask: used to indicate the speaker was thinking along the same line as the other person(用以表达说话者也有同样的思路)。例如:
—do you think kelly would be interested in joining us?
—funny you should ask. i was going to call her.
② i’ve actually been told, on more than one occasion, that i’m extremely in touch with my feminine side.
in touch with sth.: being sympathetic or sensitive to sth.(了解某事,对某事感觉敏锐)。例如:
since i work with a bunch of young girls, i’m quite in touch with today’s fashion trends.
stuart: well you can always talk to me about whatever’s bothering you.
lisa: i thought that’s what i was just doing.
stuart: (chuckle) it is sorta what you’re doing. but you’re actually complaining about the fact that you can’t complain to your best friend because she complains more than you do.
lisa: you don’t understand girl problems at all, do you? stuart: ②i’ve actually been told, on more than one occasion, that i’m extremely in touch with my 4)feminine side.
lisa: but you don’t get it. ③sometimes, all a girl really wants is for someone to hear her out as she 5)vents about her problems, without offering judgment or advice. stuart: that’s what i thought i was doing…
lisa: no, you weren’t. you were saying it was like i was complaining, and she was complaining, so there’s no problem cuz we have so much in common.

stuart: i was actually trying to say that you are a better friend than she is, because you listen to her complain all the time, but she can’t even spare a minute out of her life to listen to your complaints.
lisa: i wasn’t complaining! i was just trying to explain my situation.
stuart: you only complained about one thing, your best frien

d. but first, you said everything was going wrong in your life. well, what else is going on? i’d like to know.
lisa: i…you really care about all the ins and outs of my annoying life?
stuart: i do. and at the moment my life is relatively 6)uneventful. ④so just let me in on whatever’s eating at you.
   lisa: are you seeing anyone?
stuart: i…um…well i am seeing someone, right now, but we’ve been kind of drifting apart. i haven’t really talked to anyone about it. probably because…
lisa: you can talk to me about it. we’re friends right?
stuart: yeah we are. maybe we can both vent over drinks later at mcguiness.
  lisa: sounds like fun!
stuart: oh! i’m late for class. i’ll call you later.
lisa: see ya later. (excited) oh, i can’t wait to tell jan about this!!
③ sometimes, all a girl really wants is for someone to hear her out as she vents about her problems, without offering judgment or advice.
hear sb. out: listen to sb. without interrupting them until they have finished saying everything(听完某人要说的话)。例如:
if you had heard me out last night, you probably wouldn’t have gone and embarrassed yourself.
④ so just let me in on whatever’s eating at you.
let sb. in: let sb. know sth. secret, or some important information(让某人知道秘密,或者重要的事情)。例如:
dan agreed to let his mother in on the surprise party he planned for his dad’s retirement.
eat at sb.: trouble sb. constantly
recently, insomnia has been eating at me.
