abstract
the novels by jane austen are characterized by the unique feminine. thus they occupy an important position in british literary history. some critics have interpreted jane’s novels as conservative. they look her novels as "two-inch bit of ivory" without passion. however , jane austen is different from the other women novelists of her age because she writes from a keen feminine visual angle which other novelists often fail to do. her novels are mainly concerned about women’s lives and their unfair conditions in society, especially in education, marriages, etc. we can feel some feminine consciousness that reflected in her most famous novel pride and prejudice. although this novel is under the masculine frame. that is the possible reason why jane austen enjoys a large reading public, and even today, she is still becoming more popular.
